About the Author

            Charles Emory Burton is a retired sociologist living in Dallas, Texas.  In addition to a seminary degree, he holds the Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.  He has taught at such schools as the University of Alabama in Huntsville and McMurry University, Abilene, Texas.  He has also taught part-time at several community colleges and at the University of Texas at Dallas.

            Dr. Burton is the author of two previous books, The Poverty Debate (Greenwood Press, 1992), a textbook on poverty in the United States, and Preacher, Prophet, Poet, The Biography of Wallace E. Chappell  (AuthorHouse, 2004).  He has written several book chapters and articles on such subjects as poverty in America, homelessness, and film.  He is also an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church.
