The summer of ‘78, what a glorious summer. We would be celebrating the upcoming burning of the outhouse and the ushering in of indoor plumbing. I had also outgrown my last pair of bellbottoms. What an impractical piece of clothing, designed only to cause cycling accidents and irreversible mental and physical scarring. They would plague me no longer and just that thought alone had put me on the proverbial cloud nine.
I could not have asked for a more wonderful start to a summer vacation, but Dad seemed to have one more surprise up his sleeve. He made a trade with our neighbors, the Ballies. They got two of our rogue turkeys while we got a twenty-inch black and white Magnavox television.
This was a momentous occasion for the entire creek community; so
momentous, in fact, that guest had been invited for the grand
unveiling. My sister Peggy and I cleared the top of the
bookshelf off so dad could place the new technology. With much
fervidity, Dad twisted and yanked on the silver rabbit ears that
shot straight out from the top of the box like two radio beacons
beckoning black and white joyous technology from the farthest
reaches of space. “Are you ready, kids?” Of course I was

Biography
Deanna Johnson is a native of the Missouri Ozarks where she spent the majority of her childhood years. After her graduation from the University of Missouri at Columbia, she moved back to her small hometown. She is now a mother of four children who enjoys the outdoors as much as she does. She hopes that one day her children will enjoy telling fond stories of their child hood adventures in the Ozarks Mountains, creeks and backwoods.
