BARACK OBAMA: AN INTRODUCTION

When Barack Obama burst on the scene about two years ago, many people were unaware of who he was and wondered if he had the wherewithal to, not simply contest the Democratic Presidential Primary and the Presidential Campaign, but to win at least the first, much more both. Well, he persevered and won both by deploying an unbelievable campaign strategy and organization that, working in tandem with the internet allowed him to raise hundreds of millions of dollars, coordinate a successful national campaign strategy and amass a seven million member volunteer database of individuals, who would respond at short notice to act on the candidate’s behalf.
It is interesting how Senator Barack Obama astonished the media and pundits as he maneuvered along the arduous trail of the American Presidential campaign turf. One particular act of Barack Obama that amazed many people, particularly the pundits, and generated much discussion, was his announcement of choice for Vice President. His campaign office stated “The Senator will announce his choice for Vice President via text messaging,” which he did some time after that midnight. Many criticized this strategy, rather than, say, like making an announcement at a press conference on the Courthouse steps. Later, when Pres-Elect Obama revealed the size of his internet database, then everyone began acknowledging the brilliance of the man and his campaign strategy in this and so many other ways. As more and more time passed, people seemed to line up to praise the first African American candidate now about to ascend the stairs in a journey to the White House.
Down to the wire, when everyone vied for the independent vote, and the undecided seemed to hold the election in balance, the incredible candidate kept extolling his supporters to remain vigilant, pay little attention to the polls, do not let up, and vote early, help others vote, knock on doors, make phone calls, and work unrelentingly until the polls close. That insistence paid off handsomely.

Barack Obama: Read, Fit to Lead: Road to the White House, was written for the Daily Challenge, New York City’s Only Black Daily newspaper. The first article, “Which Way America?” was penned during the Democratic Primary on eve of the Democratic National Convention. By time of the National Election, nearly a dozen such articles were published in that newspaper, extolling Obama's candidacy, magnetism, strategy, tactics and successes, from the perspective of one person. Table of Contents reads:

The driving force that fueled this effort is the tremendous interest generated by his candidacy, not simply because Barack Obama was African American; but because of the suavity of the man, his cool demeanor, depth of his intellectuality, his ability to learn fast, the manner in which he conceptualized readily and well, his big smile, consensus and coalition building, and organizational ability, and the manner in which he attracted untold numbers of persons interested in seeing change come to America, and wanting to be part of it. As a student long ago, I remember my Professor saying, “Never let a historic situation pass you by without writing about it,” and so I wanted to be part of that history. Naturally, as the campaign unfolded and “our candidate” faced the onslaughts, fire in the belly motivated the effort more and thus the work got completed. As all this unfolded a friend suggested, why not package these historic articles and distribute them for the significance of posterity.

Frederick Monderson is a retired college professor and school teacher who taught African History in the City University of New York and American History and Government in the NY public schools. He has written more than 700 articles in the NY Black Press, Daily Challenge, Afro Times and New American newspapers.
