'What a splendid day,' Mr. Topping thought as he strode onto the verandah. The twittering of happy birds caught his attention as he looked into the clear blue sky, decorated in the distance by a few spots of white clouds.
The day he anticipated had come; adding to his jolly feeling was the warm sunshine. He could not remember a day the city had look so flawless and everything fitted so perfectly into place; clean streets, birds singing harmoniously and pure quietness characterized that morning. His lips formed into a smile of contentment. 'This is the day the lord has made,' he whistled approvingly, smiling sheepishly.
Standing in the porch in his boxers only, a gust of wind blew against Mr. Topping's hairy, slender, well- shaped body as he leaned against the railing. Gazing up at the sky again, he saw a patch of clouds bumping into each other. The exquisite scenery brought memories to him. His mother told him tales when he was younger, that the clouds would turn into moonlight monsters and get him if he would not behave. This made him smile. 'When you are a child anything an adult tells you appears to be true.' He shook his left leg impatiently, as though the gesture could make the time advance quickly.
Mr. Topping was secretly in love with his secretary. He remembered quite well when he had interviewed her. "Perfect ten," he had heard one of the security officers saying to another, as Desiree strolled away from the maintenance yard. Mr. Topping agreed to that viewpoint a long time ago.
He Awoke forty five minutes earlier than usual. The previous night, sleep was unattainable. Anxiety and excitement had captured him. The contemplation of attending work and seeing her beautiful face once again, after a long vacation was enough to keep him up all night. Even though she was married, just working around her and hearing her soft feminine voice on the Citizen Band radio had given him a sense of happiness. Never had he felt like this around another woman. She brought him to his knees like a piece of copper which when joined to steel and exposed to heat, bended forcefully without option. Even in his untamed delusion, his secretary had dominated his thoughts; his speech affected by nervousness.
