About 100 people inhabited the section of the
Two miles farther up the valley there was another creek – you already guessed its name, the Nineteen Mile Creek. The same thing is said of it and if you happened for some odd reason to be caught between the two streams, you would have to wait out the flooding without much choice of accommodation. There were no hotels, no boarding houses, just one cottage – Honeymoon Cottage. The name remained one of the longstanding jokes of the area. It was a diminutive, forlorn, unpainted building in which no one lived. Though we passed it many times, I never went to peer in its windows or check the doors to see if they were locked and if not step inside. It didn’t invite that kind of curiosity.
You couldn’t say that about other houses in the valley. Most of them had occupants. Through the great depression of the 1930s, numbers swelled not just with gold diggers on the dole, but also with others engaged in public works projects such as the
