This is a collective-work of family "trees" contributed by many sources and was compiled over an extended period of time, beginning in 1972. There were many contributors, too many in fact to acknowledge individually. Some of whom are noted within the text, others are identified in endnotes. The principal, Matthew Russell, is believed to have several siblings, but none have been proven; consequently, only Matthew is identified. However, references to probable siblings are included, but they are identified accordingly by notes. Matthew had eleven children, but only four are known to have settled in Jackson County, Ala., or neighboring counties in Ala. and Tenn.
Thomas was Matthew's first child; his entry format is typical of that on all persons given:
"1. THOMAS RUSSELL, was born Jun. 7, 1761, in Cumberland Co., PA, and died Jul. 11, 1850, in Doran's Cove in Jackson Co., AL. Thomas was a private in the RW of 1776 .... He married Tabitha Jenkins, Dec. 2, 1784, in York Dist., SC... Thirteen children: JANE, THOMAS JENKINS, MATTHEW, DAVID FRANCIS, FRANCES, MARY, JAMES R., LORENZO DOW, JOHN, NARCYSA, WILLIAM, LINNEY MARGARET, and SARAH MAXWELL; they continue below....
1A. JANE RUSSELL...married Andrew Pickens Harris...they were buried in Harris Cem. near Clemson, SC."

About the Author
Walt was born in Mesena, Georgia, and reared in Stevenson, Alabama. After finishing high school in Stevenson he enlisted in the Air Force where he served twenty-eight years in various assignments throughout the world, including Germany, the Pentagon, and Southeast Asia. Although never acquiring a degree, he continued his education while in the military, attending Rollins College in Orlando, Florida, and community colleges in San Bernardino, California, and Honolulu, Hawaii. During his five-year tour at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, Walt traveled extensively throughout the Pacific Theater of Operations managing munitions storage activities for the AF. Following the Hawaiian tour he was assigned to Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, where he retired in 1979. Walt attained the rating of Chief Master Sergeant. Included in his awards and decorations are the Meritorious Service Medal and five Air Force Commendation Medals. Walt and his wife, Jan, live in Panama City, Florida, and can usually be found on a golf course.
In 1972 Walt, a history buff, became interested in genealogy and began researching the history of his paternal ancestors.
