I woke up in recovery, hooked up to machines and ventilators. My head was bandaged tight, making my head throb in pain.
“Hey!” said Nurse Smith. “You’re awake.” It was nice to see a familiar face.
The intubation tube held the smile from forming on my face.
“Do you want me to take that out?” she asked.
I nodded. She did. “Thanks.” I said, still struggling to talk.
She said, “Miss Wright, Dr. Lemeix wanted me to see you,” as she sat me up in the hospital bed.
“What did he say?” I whispered.
“He found a cure for your cancer,” I responded excitingly.
“HE DID?!” I coughed loudly.
“Water?” she asked.
“Thanks.” I whispered, after catching my breath.
“But the treatment comes with a price.” Whatever it was, I wanted it.
“You have to go to through a procedure that takes it out.”
“Ok,” I responded, “is there a catch?”
“There’s only a five percent survival rating.” She said coldly.
“Five?” I whispered.
“Yes.”
“Only five?”
“It is very risky, but if you live, the advantage of it is that the leukemia will be gone. And you will be healthy.”
“Can I think about it?”
“Sure.” She started walking away.
“Hey Nurse Smith.”
“Call me Anne.”
“Alright, Anne, will you do me a favor?”
“Sure.”
“Will you not tell my parents?”
“Of course, MissWright.”
“Hey Anne?”
“Yes Miss Wright?” she formerly addressed me.
"Call me Kate."
