The Fig Rejection

"It's crazy, isn't it?" Molly asked, wiping the perspiration from her sunburned face with a sticky hand. She lowered the hand and stood perfectly still watching warily as the bees buzzed in and out of the massive old fig tree. The early morning breeze had vanished. All that was left was the coolness in the deep shade beneath the far-reaching branches sheltering the three women as they dropped the figs, plunk-plunk into the tin buckets.
She lowered her bucket to the ground and, putting her hands on either side of her waist, arched back painfully.
"What would I do with a fur coat? They're ostentatious, and besides, short women shouldn't wear fur coats."
The plunking stopped.
"What in the world are you talking about? It's August for heaven's sake," Jenny said, wiping her hand across her forehead and rubbing it on her cotton skirt. Wisps of long straight hair stuck to the sides of her face...hair that had somehow escaped from its tight chignon.
"I don't know...my friend Peggy wants me to buy her old fur coat. What do you think...should I? It's cheap enough."
"Do what you like, but let's talk about something cooler than fur coats,"
"You're right,” Molly replied, plopping a fig into her mouth, the juice running down her chin. She laughed and blotted it with a partially used Kleenex she pulled from the pocket of her cut-off jeans.
"Well, Jenny, as I'm sure you've noticed...I'm not the most poised person you're ever gonna meet."
"You're not that bad, Molly, but listen...how old do you all suppose this tree is?"
"Hummm...probably not as old as I feel sometimes," Molly said.
"I'm with you," Jenny said in her soft drawl as she sat down on a partially rotted log and rubbed her tired legs. "Sometimes I feel so old...like I've disappeared and people can't see me anymore."
She turned her faded blue eyes from Molly to
"Funny, life has a way of catching up with you, doesn't it?"
Charlotte and Molly nodded and the three fell silent; no one wishing to pursue the subject.
