I wasn't your average teenager. Camilla once said I was a geek and all because I commented on how blue the sky was and how verdantly green the grass.

    Even in those days I always thought in colours so being with friends, as Camilla suggested, and going out didn't appeal to me; it was no colour and, anyway, Newmarket wasn't cool; not then. But I adored my after-school life helping my father out-of-doors and in his position as head-gardener he was never happier than when nurturing roses and fruit trees and growing the finest and most delicious vegetables. I knew more about mulching and pruning than was probably beneficial to me at that age.

     My father was the antithesis of a smart man and the warmest orange imaginable. With his wild hair and shabby clothes I felt so at ease in his company; don't tell me why because I wasn't like that myself; I was inclined to be neat. He had two assistants, apart from me that is, and we all busied ourselves on this rather smart stud-farm east of Newmarket; it was a labour of love. I should add that my intest in the outdoors started with a tricky relationship with my mother; I did everything to avoid her.
