A Mirror's Deception

Flashes…who am I?  …The square root of Pi is…Slowly my mind raced into existence as thoughts became questions and questions became discoveries.  As I struggled to gain sentience within the sarcophagus that was my womb, a team of doctors busily monitored my progress.

 “His cerebrum has activated!” barked a doctor,

“All physical functions are in optimum efficiency,” added another. 

As this dance continued, a grim looking doctor entered the chamber.  He stood watching from the doorway, taking in the scene that greeted him.

 “Marvelous,” the man mused, in awe of the sepulcher in which he found himself, “the culmination of over fifty years of sweat and blood”.

The room I had awakened to was the size of an airplane hangar. To my still dilated, sleep soaked eyes, it seemed enormous. I could barely make out the dim outline of the ceiling which must have been a good hundred feet high. The place was lit by bright blue fluorescents that hurt my eyes, the light sinking into them like claws. To my sides were rows of capsules like the one I seemed to be trapped in- millions of them connected by an intricate series of wires and links to individual computers that stood in front of them like silent sentinels, gently humming. People dressed in hospital scrubs and masks - androgynous robots, bustled about, worrying over the beeps and flashes emitted on the screens.  I realized with a start that I actually knew what the chambers were. The information swelled to knowing within me…from where I could not say. The knowing took me by surprise and fascinated me at the same time. These chambers had been built for the sole purpose of growing a human being- each computer serving as mother, relentlessly feeding, sheltering and actually raising a clone that resided within. And each clone was a reflection of the first who conquered this world at an age long past. All this came to me in bursts. Before my brain could comprehend one new piece of information, another came rushing through to me like water through empty pipes. And I was drowning- it was a terrible feeling to know so much so suddenly- dizzying.   Disoriented as I was, gasping for life and clawing for control, my mind wandered into the past, and ploughed through the information that had forced its way into my brain. I found I was trying to remember his face…my face…the face of my creator who had willed me into existence.  Soon garbled images presented themselves - a city bustling with people.  And before I could comprehend what I saw, a red flash consumed the sky as an alien tower surged with unimaginable energies in the distance. 

“Go forth and live!” echoed a demonic voice, as chaos enveloped this city, “soon we shall meet!” 

I closed my eyes once again floating in the knowledge, letting everything sink in slowly. When I reopened them, the world did not seem alien anymore, the light felt tempered. I looked around once again, this time down the length and width of the room. I could not see the end of the row of pods on either side of me. It seemed to stretch for miles. The walls in front of me were closer, though a good 30 feet away. They were decorated with computer screens blinking with unintelligible numbers – flashes of blues, yellows and reds.
