“Evenin’, Deputy.” He said as they stepped up onto the wooden walkway. “Sure is nice out here, ain’t it?” He recognized the man, Roy Olsen. “Yep.” The man looked up and felt himself stiff en. He looked at the two men with a mixture of fear and animosity. “So ain’t you boys out a little late.” “Whatta ya mean?” Sandy Bob asked from the edge of the wooden sidewalk. “Well, I was just thinkin’, men of yer age an’ condition need quite a bit more sleep that younger folk and would be in bed by now.” “Oh! Gee, really? And I was thinkin’ we’d stroll around town and take in the evenin’ sites.” Buster said. “Don’t ya think, Sandy Bob?” “My thoughts, exactly. But then the deputy’s probably right. I’d hate it if we weren’t up to the doin’s of tomorrow.“ “Whatta ya mean by that?” Roy asked. “Oh, nothin’.” Buster replied. “Jus’ that we still got a long night ahead of us. Gotta clean our weapons up and sharpen these.” He pulled out the long Bowie knife. “She a little dull right now.” He drew it lightly across the railing and produced a long rolled sliver of unpainted wood. He caught it deftly with his left hand and tossed it to the seated man. “Must be cause I ain’t done no scalpin’ with it lately. Damn sheath done dulled it.” The deputy looked up from what he had caught and found the two men smiling grimly down at him. “When the Sheriff comes in tomorrow mornin’ tell him I’m gonna be watchin’ him real close from now on.” Buster half whispered harshly. “I’m gonna become his shadow, ya might say. Think ya can remember ta tell ‘im that?” “Eh. Yeah. Yeah. S-s-ure.” The man replied, feeling suddenly weak. How did they know about tomorrow!
The two men turned and started walking away. Glancing down again at the shaving of wood Sandy Bob had tossed into his lap he found the object was paper thin, about an inch wide. Carefully he smoothed it out to its full length. It stretched out almost eight inches. He stomach churned. That’s a dull knife? I could shave with the damn thing.
In the shadows of the darkness came the voice of the shorter of the two mountain men. “Remember that ‘Pache we strung up after him an’ his pards tried ta bushwhack us a few days ago?” Buster asked Sandy Bob as they reached the comer of the building. “Sure!” “Well his ears are dried out now. Ya want one of ‘um?” “Why not? I deserve a trophy too. Was me what caught sight them scum in the first place. “ “Okay! Okay!” Buster replied. “Just cause it took me another mile ta find ‘um in them rocks!” The deputy was watching the departing men and saw Buster had something in his hand. He couldn’t see clearly what it was in the darkness, but an idea had been planted in his mind. What he thought he was seeing was an ear strung on leather thong. The taller man accepted the prize and dropped it over his head letting it hang around his neck. “Scheesh!” The man mumbled. He felt the shiver pass through his body.

About the Book
Buster Jiggs and Sandy Bob are history buffs and actors in their spare time. Lady Luck has smiled on them and they are off and running, building a Wild West town in Yuma, Arizona. But things are now all, eh, roses as Buster in his earlier life spent too much time listening to Coast-to-Coast as he drove his 18-wheeler cross country. He has discovered a time machine and wants to give it a shot.
After a test run with what turns out to be a real time machine, Buster returns to present day with plenty of gifts including a real wagon and a pair of draft horses and a wolf to prove his trip. Sandy Bob is just about convinced and with a little more talk Buster suggest they go back to 1881 and see what really brought about the shoot out at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona Terroritory.
History dosen't seem to be all that off but there are still some surprises to be had. And Mr. Murphy has managed to follow them in their trip to the past. It is not all fun and games.
About the Author
Buster Jiggs is a pseudonym the writer used when he performed with the Yuma Territorial Wild West Show in the 1990s. Sandy Bob was his side kick who often suffered from Buster’s antics on and off the stage. Off stage, Buster Jiggs/James E. McMullen, III lives in Yuma, Arizona and is a retired truck driver. He is an avid reader of history, new age, and action adventure. While doing the grandfather thing with his wife behind him, he scrambles to keep up with 5 grand children from toddlers to adults, two dogs, a chicken and not so fast, a desert tortoise. Steppin’ ‘Round Time is his first book. He’s been writing since high school in Macon, Georgia where he was born and raised before entering the US Army in 1967. He haunted the libraries in Macon and Belmont, North Carolina where as such a model student, he attended military grade school. Some day he would like to be considered to be in the same league with his pseudo-mentors: W.E.B. Griffin, Brad Thor, Vince Flynn, Don Pendleton, and Dana Fuller Ross. In the meantime he’ll just keep on reading and writing.
