About the Author
I began writing this and four other books in my home which is in the German town of Hildesheim. Hildesheim lies in the foothills of the Hartz mountains; T he town is exceedingly beautiful, Goethe once lived and worked here. It is very much a town of churches and schools steeped in history.
My APARTMENT IS SITUATED IN THE Ludwig Strasse; an old fashioned cobbled street in Der Nordstadt. The view from my writing desk is superb. In the distance the snowy peaks of the Harz mountains. Below our wonderful wooded garden with what I call our ’pine grove at prayer’
I sat at my writing desk in my wheelchair planning what I called the ’New Jerusalem’
After months spent in hospital after my stroke I found seeing the way forward somewhat difficult, especially after the death of my wife, Friederike
I used to be an organist; of some note in my native Germany. I made recordings of the organ music of Johann Sebastian Bach Then came the stroke, my left hand now lies in my lap totally without feeling or movement. I have vivid dreams in which I can still play, but of course I wake into this living nightmare.
However all is not lost. My right side is totally unaffected ‘Gott sei Gedank’. I can read, I can write, my memory is unimpaired and, most importantly of all. I have the incomparably lovely, wonderful THANDI. Without Thandi I CAN DO NOTHING; SHE GETS ME UP TAKES ME TO THE PALACE OF POCELAIN ,SHAVES AND SHOWERS ME FEEDS ME AND LOOKS AFTER MY EVERY NEED AND WANT. SHE IS WHAT MY MUM WOULD HAVE CALLED ‘A GOOD shiddach’ if, like me, you are Jewish you will know what I mean!
