Nubbins
Bama’s sister, Nada Sparks had this little
He was about three pounds of protection for Aunt Nada. Nubbins thought he was a big dog.
Nubbins did not like the Postman or the Garbage man. As Aunt Nada said, “Nubbins thinks they are stealing my mail and garbage from me.”
So why didn’t he like little girls with lacy socks?
When I first met Nubbins, I bent down to pet him like I did all the other dogs I had met. Nubbins just began to growl and he showed his teeth. I stood up and I froze.
Nubbins began to bark and he ran to my ankle and he began to rip and tear my lacy socks while I was still wearing them.
I managed to run and I got away from the tiny growling-biting dog and into the house where he caught up with me. So I ran for the safety of my mom while he began to attack my other ankle and lacy sock.
My mom saw my socks and saw I was trembling and shaking all over while I was still crying. ‘What’s wrong and what happened to your socks?”
“That dog…..” was all I could get out between sobs.
Aunt Nada heard Nubbins barking and came to where we were to pick him up. He calmed right down. “All right, just for that you get to stay in the car.”
Aunt Nada came back in and came to picked me up. “Nubbins is used to big people, he hasn’t been around any children, I’m sorry he scared you and ruined your lacy socks.”
It took years to get over the tiny terrifying dog. But when I grew bigger, he was not like that with me anymore.
Mommy kept one of my shredded socks for my baby book. What a memory for me!
My lesson was tiny things can scare you just as much a big things.

About the Book
Since I was a small child I have loved storytelling. The right words could make you see things in your mind.
I want my short stories to open your mind to what it was like growing up in the 1950’s and 1960’s in a suburb of
So we will be “Looking Back” at my Barnes family in Whitehaven after WWII, pre-Graceland, Yes, we grew up two miles from Graceland as the Rock and Roll age began, through the Cuban Missile Crisis, to the early Beatle Years and what life was like back then.

But her love has always been story telling.
While being interviewed she was challenged to write the book that was inside her, as the interviewer put it.
