CHAPTER 12 Lunch: The snow sounded different than it did hours earlier. It appeared hollow and less solid than we originally thought. I yelled, “Stewart, stop. Get out of there. It isn’t safe,” but I was too late. In a flash, Lunch disappeared from sight. He was on the snow one second and below it the next. I was mortified. Our horses took on a very important job, but they had to get on with it because Lunch was struggling to survive. Hoot threw me the reins to his horse so that he could look into the crevasse. He yelled out, “It’s a crevasse, and a big one at that, with a rushing stream of melting water below the snow. The snow that you guys are on with Applejack and Blue is weak.” We made the decision to use the horses, one at a time, to try and pull Lunch out. Standing on the weakening snowfield, Hoot tried to lasso poor Lunch and then tie the other end of the rope to the saddle horn of his horse Tomahawk.
TWO BRAINS - ONE BODY: Life for humans demands the function of both sides of the brain that compete for dominance over one body. Ideally, the right and left work in combination, where the left bows out when the right gets a hit and must take command. I was in the pasture with Russek one morning. Completely focused on my horse, I did not see, nor feel another horse creeping his way over to us, but Russek certainly did. Just as the other horse swung his back end around to kick me, something told me to move and now. I heard the thud of hooves pound Russek’s left side. I felt remiss, but I learned never to second-guess any inkling of danger that I feel.
TRUST: I wasted years of my life trying to push away guilt when in reality I had to eradicate it because regret is one thing and guilt is another. Guilt. Rarely has one small word been so widely misunderstood. I was weary from all of the paralysis that this emotion cast upon me. Maud Purcell stated, “Guilt is frequently viewed as a virtue, as a high sense of responsibility and morality. The truth: guilt is the greatest destroyer of emotional energy. It leaves you feeling immobilized in the present by something that has already occurred.” By staying consumed with guilt, it will “keep you from moving forward in a positive and productive way and can be considered a bad habit.”1 These words are a moving reminder of how essential it is to remain in the now. There is nothing can be done about the past.
A BODY DIVIDED: Samantha. Our last time together at the barn, I wanted to say goodbye to Beauty. She stood, as she did so often, amid a small crowd of mares. This time, however, I was not afraid. I was cautious, but not fearful, aware, but not vulnerable. Something within me had shifted and half way to my favorite horse, Beauty looked up and met my gaze. She began walking forward and I stood to greet her. Dianna stood by in calm observance of this moment. For both of us, it was not just about the horse-human relationship, but about our ability to trust and love. The gift Dianna and Beauty gave me is one that has blossomed into stronger relationships, closer ties, and better alignment between desire and intention. Fear is dangerous. It nearly killed me; eating away at my cells until cancer tainted my blood. Looking back, I am grateful to the cancer, the horses and people who brought me into this awareness. Quite literally, I owe them my life.
CHAPTER 33: Questions Answered. I believe I can communicate with animals and humans in the afterlife because energy is infinite, but to satisfy my curiosity, and to substantiate my work, I read The Living Energy Universe by Gary Schwartz, PhD, and Linda Russek, PhD. The next reading is with Cacao a Doberman who passed on the week before. This communication validates my unscientific speculation that our pets do the same activities in their non- physical form as they did on earth. This story has a peculiar twist to it.
