A middle-aged man sat in his home looking thoughtful; a tray containing bitter kola lay in front of him; a woman in her late forties came out from an inner room carrying a clay bowl. "Here's your soup, my husband," she said as she set it in front of him.
"Oh, thank you," he replied as he came back to his conscious mind.
"What were you thinking about, my husband?" she asked.
"Ah, nothing to bother a lady about."
"Really?" she said.
"Of course, Ogechi," he replied as he took the first bite of goat meat from his pepper soup. "You cooked it well," he commended.
"I always cook well, even better than any woman in this village," she boasted.
"Isn't it why I married you? Believe me, I would not pay a bride price on a woman whose meal tastes like poison." Ogechi laughed.
There was a knock on the door. "Answer the door and find out who it is." Ogechi opened the door. It was Agbai, a member of the council of elders. "Good evening, sir," she greeted him.
"Good evening," he replied.
"Agbai-Agbai." The middle-aged man hailed him.
"Eluwa! The wisest elder in Asaga," he said as he hailed back.
"You are welcome; please have a seat," said Eluwa.
"Thank you," replied Agbai as he sank to a bamboo chair covered with leopard skin.
"I bring you the latest news, my friend."
"What is it, Agbai?" Eluwa asked anxiously.
"Sir Lord Lugard has merged all the villages and towns in the regions of the Niger river through to the north, down to the south, which also covers the cities in the southeast and the southwest. Officials from the state government came this afternoon and gave the papers to the chief containing all the information. They said he calls it the amalgamation and that our new name is Nigeria."
"Nige ... what?" asked Eluwa, not familiar with the name.
"Ni-ge-ria," replied Agbai, pronouncing it more audibly. "Chief Orji has instructed the town crier to call an assembly of the villagers in the village square tommorow morning. He will annouce the news along with other important information."
"Hmm," said Eluwa as he thought briefly. "Do you know what this means?" he asked.
"Well, we are now a nation and a people governed by the British," answered Agbai.
"That is not the point, Agbai." Eluwa leaned forward. "You see, my friend, times are changing and the system of leadership is getting more organized. If we are to be at the top, this is when it matters most," Eluwa explained...

Hot Trials is a book that portrays the activities of man and how his activities affects his environment, either positively or negatively.
As humans, we are faced with certain factors which includes; the laws of the community we find ourselves in, our fate, limitations, and other crucial challenges that are vital for the advancement of our community.
Generations have always produced revolutionary minds whose psyche deviates from the norm, to impart rare traits on their societies and have turned them for the better or worse.
In Hot Trials, the minds of men are portrayed, as we read about the selfish goals of individuals that have ruined their community, and the heart that beats for service to it's people that has built it's community.
These two distinguished minds inhabits every individual, and the welfare of every person in a given community is determined by the psyche that dwells in the heads of their leaders.
Hot Trials opens our understanding to the simple truths of backwardness and progress communities can achieve.
By reading Hot Trials, we can fully understand the reason some societies have acutely rich and poor people. Hot Trials exposes the psyche of us all and challenges us to retrace our steps, by cultivating the right attitude and discipline to transparent leadership and followership.
When the leaders of a community put the resources of the land to the service of the people, there is development in every sense of the word, but when they choose greed, corruption, and other ill-mannered vices as their instruments of leadership, crisis and chaos will be the society's companion, as you can witness in my book and more importantly, in our world.
This book is hotly intriguing, provoking, touching, educating, and entertaining.

About the Author
Ifeanyichukwu Uko was born on November, 25, 1984 in Austin, Texas. He spent a great deal of his life in Nigeria before coming back to the United States.
He has a passion for writing. "Ify" as most of his friends call him is a student and majors in biology. He hopes to become a doctor and a movie producer in the near future.
He is the second son of Elder and Mrs K U Uche, and has three brothers.
Growing up in Nigeria, Ifeanyichukwu experienced life in another dimension that most children who grew up in the United States are not used to.
He fetched water like other Nigerian kids, played soccer bare-footed with friends, mashed melon for dinner with a mortar and pestle, among others... he still cherishes those moments even at present.
When Ifeanyichukwu finished high school, he taught English and Biology in a "Tutorial Center" for four months.
Now in the United States, Ifeanyichukwu is pressing to further his studies. As a writer, he intends to study his environment and write books about the beautiful and ugly things he has witnessed in this great country.
Ifeanyichukwu works at Walmart as a housewares sales associate, but still finds time after his busy workdays to engage in his passion of writing.
"Hot Trials" is his first book, and he is determined to thrill his readers with many more interesting books. He expresses his stories and writings in his own unique style.
For Ifeanyichukwu, life seems different here from what he experienced in Nigeria. Now, he must make new friends, but not forget the boys and girls he grew up with, embrace the N.F.L while still adoring his beloved soccer, learn a new accent and not forget the tongue of his origin.
