To Love Again

A middle-aged man wearing pale blue surgical scrubs and a starched-white coat walked into the room with the trooper. He introduced himself, but I had no idea what he said. I heard words that I knew I understood, yet they seemed very foreign to me. He touched my shoulder and asked me if I had heard what he had just told me. I had to admit that I had not. I forced myself to pay attention to the words the second time. My mind kept wondering back to the good-byes from just a few hours ago. This time I heard the doctor explain that my daughter Sarah had died instantly. He explained that the impact of the crash had been concentrated on her side of the vehicle. He told me that the emergency medical personnel at the scene had tried to help her, but she was gone by the time they had arrived. I was hearing his words, but I couldn't bring myself to believe him. The doctor went on to explain that Brad was on his way to surgery. He had several broken bones and a severe head injury. The doctors were not giving him much of a chance. The doctor asked me if I had anyone I would like him to call. I just sat there for a minute not knowing what to do. How could this be happening? It wasn't that long ago that I was telling them good-bye for the day. Now it may appear that I had told them good-bye forever.
