under the dining room table
In summertime
Under the dining room table,
White curtains filtering the cool breeze,
My sister and I have tea,
Holding delicately the lid
Of her china pot,
She pours.
We talk of baseball,
John Wayne, growing up,
Sears catalog paper dolls
In tabbed dresses.
All afternoon on the cool linoleum floor
Beneath the starched scent of lace.
Listen to the talking of neighbors outside
My mother hanging clothes on the line.

About the Book
This collection of poetry includes simple details of life from a woman's complex relationship with her birthland and the world around her. Each poem is intended to be, like a painting, only a moment in time-space where lives, thoughts and environment intersect.
About the Author
Joyce DeCastro Volmut is a writer and woodcarver who lives in Topeka Kansas. Born to Italian parents, she is first generation American. She began writing poetry in elementary school. For the past thirty years she has been a member of a local writers group, The table for eight. Volmut has a masters of arts in nursing. This is her first book.
