We still could not fully understand what happened. I put my arm around Rikki and let her sob uncontrollably. The series of events ran through my head.
“Dr. Sweeney, can we have a moment alone?”
I needed time to focus on next steps. As Rikki cried, I tried to figure out the best thing to say. I decided rather than saying more, I would resort to the lowest common denominator.
“Honey, we’re going to get through this. I know it seems unbelievable at this time, but we’ll get through it together. I’m going to call back Dr. Sweeney so we can move on to the next steps.”
I called down the hall for Dr. Sweeny. She was with another patient so she couldn’t come immediately. Meanwhile, Rikki put on her clothes. By the time she was finished, Dr. Sweeney had returned.
“Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, I talked to my colleagues at Crawford Long and they will be ready to induce labor at 3 p.m. today.”
Rikki had regained her composure, but was not quite ready for Dr. Sweeney’s news.
“What do you mean by induced labor?” asked Rikki as she stared incredulously into Dr. Sweeney’s eyes.
“Mrs. Johnson, I know you’ve been through a very traumatic experience but you must deliver your son,” replied Dr. Sweeney. “We don’t want to further complicate matters associated with your pregnancy.”
