The navy blue leather photo album that belonged to Jens Larsen in 1937 was safeguarded first by my grandmother and then by my mother. The photo album is about ten by seven inches with heavy black pages. Mounted on these pages are small three by four inch photos, taken with a Kodak box camera. This treasured heirloom, full of so many fond memories, has been passed on to me. It is all we have left to remind us of my uncle Jens Larsen and his short, but remarkable life. This is his story, and these are his photographs.

Anne L. Thurland is a 9th generation Virgin Islander. She is a certified health education specialist and a social marketing specialist. Anne has a Masters in Public Health and is a director at the Department of Health.
Anne has written numerous grants, strategic plans, co-authored peer reviewed journal articles and designed a public health website. She is a self-taught digital photographer and likes to create abstract art from her photos. Anne is interested in photo restoration and encourages families to digitally preserve their family photos.
