As much as we yearn for the spring here, I realize that the warmer weather will allow the war to resume, and you will be in danger again. My fear for your safety increases daily as a result. I know you are a man who will never shirk his duty, and I am sure you will be very brave when the time comes. The sun was beginning to drop near the tops of the trees, leaving the woods in deep shadows.
Captain DeWaldt and his lieutenants stood looking west. A strange and unnerving sound like a wind blowing out of the forest reached their ears. Fernando felt a chill of goose bumps, with the sensation that all the hair on his body was standing on end. He could see every man in the 1st Brigade stop whatever they were doing and turn their heads toward the strange rumbling coming from the woods. Several deer came bursting into the clearing in obvious panic. Soldiers stood up from eating their dinners. Colonel Meyer wheeled his horse around and spurred it into a gallop as he headed across the field to his regiment. He was screaming orders at the top of his lungs, which due to the sound of bugles and cannon fire, no-one heard.
