I couldn't tell Dr. Poppit that Laurie's Hgl was rising as she had refused to let me know the results of her tests. Here is the conversation that took place when next I received a life altering phone call. Me: "Hello, who is this?" Social Worker (on her first case): "We're coming to get your baby!" Me: "What?" Social Worker: "We've had a report that your baby is in imminent danger of dying." Me: "May I please speak wih your supervisor?" Social Worker: "I'm sorry, he's busy." Stunned I hung up. My immediate reaction was to take my baby and flee. The problem was that I had no where to go and no money with which to do it. I phoned Bill and Charlie to come home immediately! Second Call from BCW: I explained that I lived and taught in the same neighborhood, and that an entourage of state officials arriving at the apartment and removing my baby would hardly go unnoticed. We agreed to meet at the hospital.
