Memories

The early-morning sunlight refuses to be denied entrance. It struggles through the bamboo shades and slithers across the room with a deadly determination. It defies all barriers. Alas, it reaches its target. I grimace at first even though the sun’s rays are like lips placing warm kisses on my face. But as its warmth reaches my closed eyelids, I attempt to prevent the inevitable … awakening. I pull the covers over my head and the rays begin to tickle my now exposed toes. Just give me a couple of minutes more, I think, as if something will hear me and can roll back the morning light. I open my right eye, scratch my thigh, yawn, and with great effort, force my left eye to follow suit.
