“Where are you going?” The sleep-filled voice of Sharon asked as she gazed at him through half closed eyes.
“Outside, I’m going to get a newspaper, and take a few laps around the high school track.”
“Oh, okay, my head hurts, do you have any Tylenol?”
“Yeah.” He quickly left the room and returned with a glass of water and two caplets. She took the medicine and turned back over. Moments later, he was driving toward Big Bethel high school. He parked next to the track and dialed Devera Harmon’s number on his cell phone. It took several rings before someone answered.“Hello... I mean Dee Dee’s house of style, Angie speaking,” the voice explained. Charles had to listen carefully as there was a lot of background noise, as if a party or some other unusual activity were taking place.
“Hello? Is Devera there?”
“Who? You need to speak up honey, I can hardly hear you.”
“Devera, is Devera there?” He repeated louder.
“De-who? I think you got the wrong number.”
“I mean, Dee Dee, is Dee Dee there?”
“Oh, yeah, she’s here, but she can’t talk right now, she’s-“
“Who’s on the phone?” A voice yelled from the background noise. The voice sounded like Dee Dee, but something was wrong.
“Who’s speaking?” The women asked.
“Charles.”
“Charles?, he said his name is Charles,” the woman yelled to someone.
“Give me the phone,” the distressed voice of Dee Dee ordered.
“No, Dee Dee, just sit down, you don’t need to be dealing with any men right now anyway,” a voice replied.
More debate ensued until finally Charles heard the choking, sniffling voice of the woman he adored so much.
“Charles?”
“Yes, Dee Dee? Are you alright?”
“No..I’m ..he…..”
“What happened Dee Dee, What happened?”
She tried to talk again but the heaving sobs overtook her voice again.“Dee Dee, I’m coming over there right now!” Without any thought to what Sharon would think, he slammed the car into drive and burned rubber toward Dee Dee's place.

Clyde Dowell II is an Electronics Engineer and Air Force veteran whose travels have taken him from Europe to Asia and from California to Virginia. He has authored several short stories and editorial pieces on subjects ranging from military fiction to social commentary. A “student of life”, he enjoys meeting people and learning from their experiences. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, he currently resides in Virginia.
