Out of Gas
Collette graduated from Southern Illinois University where Rob is now in his senior year (go Salukis!). We recently had a very nice visit with him in the fall of 2008, and upon our return, one of life’s “moments” flowered before our eyes. Needing gas, we stopped at our favorite Flying J gas station. As I was filling the car with pricey fuel, I noticed a lovely young woman sitting on the asphalt in front of an aged van with a California license plate. She sported dirty bare feet, a worn-out dress and a plastic flower in her hair, and was playing the guitar. I could see a little girl inside the van, along with a dog. Next to her sat a sign that read: “Out of gas, please help,” positioned next to an empty gas container. As we readied to resume our trip home, I noticed a hippie-looking man (no relation) nearby; whom I assumed was the man of the family.
Our world is filled with homeless people, but they were on the move. “Out of gas” may be a form of begging, but in my mind, they just didn’t fit the visual norm for begging. So, I drove the car over to them and lowered the window. The woman approached and I gave her $5 and she excitedly said, “Thank you and God bless you.” I repeated the “God bless you,” but should have beat her to it.

About the Author
After graduating Tarkio College and marrying my lovely Diana we ventured into life's maze. Not yet able to realize the power of imagination and focused thought we were able to experience poverty as measured by my current view. Settling in with the best company on earth in 1970; McDonald's Corporation provided escalating success opportunites which fueled my entreprenural urges. The fear of freedom from conventional employment started on March 14, 1986 when Riverside Chocolate Factory was born. Our new company which still propers to this day has given Diana & I a retirement that personifies all our dreams collected on our life path. This includes a beautiful lake house in Illinois, three Beach condos on a quiet & secluded beach on the Island of Cozumel and a lovely road house (bus) that provides the gift of visiting our children and grandchildren. Retirement came in 2006 and my writing career began in the fall of 2007. Hippie Bob & the Chocolate Factory is a self help book and seven children books are completed to date.
