Chapter One
This story is about Willy and Nilly, a brother and sister, who live on a farm with their Momma and Poppa in the quiet town of Ol'Kalucky, Kentucky. They have a dog named Quilly, and a cat named Milly. Outside they have a goat named Billy and a big old cow named Lillie.
Just like any other weekend Willy and Nilly went on a picnic. Momma packed them a delicious lunch and said, "Be back before dark." Little did they know there were many adventures to come.
After a long walk into the woods, they found the perfect place to eat under a big old shady oak tree.
Nilly started to unpack their lunch and set up their drinks. As she took the first bite, she yelled, "OH NO, ANTS!" Their blanket became surrounded by hundreds of hungry marching ants.
Nilly quickly gathered everything and moved further down toward the lake.
After Willy and Nilly settled down once again, they enjoyed their lunch on that beautiful day.
"I'm going to climb that tree!" said Willy. "I'll come with you." said Nilly. Willy ran as fast as he could, but Nilly could hardly keep up.
Willy started climbing up the tree as fast as he could. Once Nilly caught up, Willy was almost at the top of the tree. "Come down!" demanded Nilly. "NO! You are acting like a nervous Nilly!" said Willy. As Nilly looked up at Willy she noticed a scared look on his face.
"What's wrong?" asked Nilly. "Heeeeeeeelp!" cried Willy. "I hear buzzing up in the tree!" Nilly again ordered him to come down. Willy climbed down the tree very carefully but quickly. Just as he got to the bottom he stared to cry. "I think I got stung by a bee!" Nilly rushed over to him.
It was two bee stings, one on each hand. Nilly thought of the book she read on the American Indians. She would do as the Indians would have done, which was to pack a bee sting with mud. "Oh that's much better," said Willy, as he was trying very hard to be brave. "Thank you!" said Willy. "Your welcome!" said Nilly.
All of a sudden there was a loud thunder in the sky. It started getting very cloudy. Nilly thought it was time to go home. They started to run through the woods. The thunder grew louder. They saw a big flash of lighting in the sky. Rain started to pour out of the sky.
They ran over to an old abandoned fort and they went inside. "We'll stay here until the rain stops." said Nilly. "What will we do in here?" asked Willy. "We can sing songs or play a game." "I don't like it in here, I want to go home." Nilly said "Shhhhhhhhh! Wait! I hear something!" "I hear it too, what is it?" said Willy.
"Oh, look over there in the corner, it's a litter of kittens!" said Nilly. One ... two ... three ... four ... five!" counted Willy. "Where is the mommy cat?" asked Willy. "I don't know." replied Nilly. "I'm going to pick one up." said Willy. "No!" exclaimed Nilly. "First I will have to see if they are friendly."
Nilly slowly approached the kittens. Once she got close to them they all ran over to her and started weaving in and out around her shoes. After the kittens all started to rub their little faces on her and were purring loudly, she knew they were friendly. The children had fun playing with the kittens.
The rain had now stopped. "We're going to go to Aunt Tilly's house now." said Nilly. "Why?" asked Willy. "Because Aunt Tilly has eight cats and she will know what to do for the kittens."
