General Eisenhower did not want the statue of George Washington proposed by Donald DeLue, one of America's foremost scultors. It was DeLue's favorite, showing Washington kneeling in prayer and his sword at rest. So Valley Forge got another version by the scultor.
George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery commissioned DeLue to finalize George Washington Kneeling In Prayer for its main entrance.
The Park continued to acquire statues, plaques, paintings and other art work over the years to compliment the natural beauty of the cemetery. Many of these bronzes and paintings were associated with Washington's experience as the country's father and leader.
Piece by piece the art was accumulated over the years and set into position where it would have the deepest impact and compliment the General as well. Other artwork by noted artist was added to areas that were conducive to the design of the art. A Children's Garden and Serenity Pool have bronzes of a mystical boy and girl, the Memorial Tower houses sculpture and paintings reflecting the spiritual peace of the surroundings.
From its battles with Mother Nature to its fight for acceptance as a non-profit, non-sectarian cemetery, the history of George Washington Memorial Park unfolds as you turn the pages.

About the Book
A group of men find a wild, virgin site in New Jersey near which soldiers of George Washington's army camped during the Revolution. They have a vision of building a beautifull cemetery on the site as an important community project, but have little resources.
They are swept up in the new concept of Memorial Parks as a cemetery plan and decide to creat a cemetery rich in natural beauty, accentuated with notable works of art. Their struggle to accomplish their goal is told through the history of the cemetery's annual reports to their association members.
