Three
days after the riot, Herb was at home resting. Ty heard about the incident and decided to pay Herb a visit. He
had a plan.
They were watching television and a white,
female reporter interviewed the mayor of Calverton County, Virginia.
“Mayor
Roberts, how do you feel about Friday’s fiasco?” she asked.
“Well,
these people know that things in the United States have changed. They all know
that demonstrating in public is illegal in America, now. They know the
consequences for breaking the law, and they will suffer for them. If you ask
me, they got what they deserved. We’ve gone to great lengths to make this city
a great place to live, and it’s not appreciated when our historical buildings
are torched by protestors.”
Like I said, they got what they deserved.”
“Even
the 37 people killed and the 70-plus injured?” the reporter asked.
The
Mayor reiterated, “Like I said…” he pushed the microphone aside and walked
away.
“Ain’t
that a bitch,” Herb said with bandages on his head and hands, and swollen lips.
He turned the television off.
“Damn,
Dog. That’s f**ked up, man,” Ty said. “They just don’t give a f**k.”
“Yeah,
I know. That’s why I told you to come on over when you called. Those motherf**kers don’t give a
rat’s ass about us. So, guess what? I’m saying f**k them, too. They damn near
killed my girl for no reason, and they think that I’m just going to let it go
like that. Well, they got another thing coming.” A tear swelled in Herb’s eye
and his voice got shaky. “They took away the only thing that I love on this
earth. First it was my sister, and I let it go, but not this time. Not this
time.”

Herbert
Savon didn’t volunteer to be a martyr, he was chosen. In 2009 his world was
turned upside down when Washington D.C. was bombed by a white supremacy group.
He was displaced to Calverton, Virginia also known as “Calico” which would
become our new nation’s capitol. With a new place to live, came a new set of
rules to live by. The Constitution was
re-written and it was not designed to protect nor benefit its citizens.
Lawlessness and police brutality grew. Church bombings and lynchings became
daily occurrences as “white power” became more of a force to reckon with.
People protested this treatment and they were cut down by fire hoses and
gunfire that caused the country to
regress to the days of the civil rights movement. America’s madness landed on Herbert Savon’s door step. He responded, and his actions sent shock waves
from Calico to California.
