Then, IT happened.
Someone started banging at the door. “I’ll get it!” I yelled. Janice and LeAnn, the unlucky ones who were right next to me, covered their ears. We ran to the door, me in the front. Puck got up warily. He was being cautious either because he had been reading a book that made him want to think before he did anything, or it was just his fairy instinct. Either way, he was right to be worried. I opened the door. Whoever it was launched themselves at me and pinned me down.
It was Xenon.
He picked me up again, holding only my neck, and he was trying to strangle me. I tried to move my arms, but I couldn’t get enough oxygen to move anything. The girls were too terrified to even talk. I couldn’t see Puck anywhere.
“Yer dead, human!” he roared.
“What did I do?” I choked. I could hardly talk.
“Our best doctor fainted, causing us to have to postpone the human’s surgery.”
Giana recovered first. “So what?”
“The human now knows what’s going on. Now, stop talking to me. I have to concentrate.”
“On what?” Janice asked, trying to stall him to give Faris time to make up a plan to make him stop.
“You’re next,” he growled, instead of telling her what he had to concentrate on. Janice’s eyes grew gargantuan and I couldn’t help but to smile about her petrified face. I smiled in the face of danger.
Scared, good girl, me, smiled in the face of danger.
Sometimes, that is a good idea, but when the face of danger is Xenon…well…it’s not the best idea. His face contorted with fury, but I still wanted to go on smiling.
“Stop it!” Faris screamed.
“Please!” added LeAnn. I thought at the time that they were talking to Xenon. However, I was wrong. I felt myself slipping into unconsciousness.
Thud!
Xenon’s eyes widened and his grip on my neck loosened. He fell to the ground, out cold. I staggered back, almost falling until Faris and LeAnn caught me. I started massaging my neck. I gulped in huge gasps of air. When I had finally caught my breath, I saw the reason why Xenon was now on the ground at my feet.
Puck.
“Why?” was all I could get out of my mouth. He was in a karate stance and looked surprised that a well-placed punch on the back would have the results that his did.
"The door’s open,” he answered after a moment’s thought. “If I hadn’t punched him, Xenon would’ve noticed.” I could tell he was hiding something, but I didn’t ask for more details than I already had.
I smiled and looked at the still lifeless form of Xenon. We tricked you, Mr. I-know-everything. Humans and…whatever you think of Puck beat you. Heh heh heh.
So, we did what all prisoners would do in our place: we escaped.
