The snow was beautiful as it blew through the trees and billowed around the corners of the house. Smith reveled in its beauty and paused now and then to appreciate the winter wonderland in which he stood. He also noticed that the lay of the land, to say nothing of the positioning of his house--formerly a community church--created a kind of swale effect which seemed to deposit the deepest snow precisely where he wished to clear it. This, of course, delighted Flash, his newly acquired tri-colored collie. It was leap and roll, bark and pounce. The dog had an absolutely delightful symbiosis with the storm. Smith had an appreciation as well but it was colored with the pragmatic goal of clearing a driveway circle, a place for the trash bin, an opening where the fire hydrant could be accessed by the men in the red trucks if the worst were to happen. In short, his playing was compromised by his desire to accomplish.

Smith Gale, former Navy Chaplain, now owner and teacher at a martial arts academy, had successfully assisted a friend in trouble in a rather heavily reported exploit. Having read of this, a neighbor decides to commission him to locate her "abducted" daughter, Victoria. His payment would be a valuable antique Ford with the same name as his quarry. He accepts the challenge and proceeds to interview everyone who knew her or of her. As an adult, she could have simply gone off on her own so the police are limited in their search. His pursuit takes him from her high school days, through college, her painting loft apartment, a Manhattan art gallery tied to a former boy friend, and finally to the Florida Keys where she appears to be held.
