I’ve been gathering up all of my journals that I’ve kept over the years. What a journey. There’s a saying that says “What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are little things compared to what lies between us.” This is so true and it’s taken me 36 years and you 40, to figure that out.
But 13 years ago, I acquired a new hobby that you weren’t familiar with back then. I like to run. Sometimes I get up, put my sneakers on, and I run whenever and wherever the wind blows. This morning I’m running to get my hair braided at the New Essence Hair Salon. I’ll just get a few cornrolls since my mother refuses to help me take out the Kanekalon hair. She said it doesn’t make sense to have fake hair when I already have long thick hair. But most of the time, I have nowhere to run to. My neighbors will often yell out-
“Sasha! Where you going honey?”
And I usually lie and say to myself, “I have no idea. I have no idea where I’m going. I’m just running.”
I’ve thought about calling you a few times, but I’m not ready. I know what the Lord is trying to do because I’ve been working on letting the past go. Like a mother having contractions and about to give birth, it’s time. But like many women who have been in the eye of a storm without insurance, you keep it moving because you’re too afraid to wake up one day with everything gone-your heart, your soul, and most of all, Jesus. That’s why I haven’t returned your calls. I don’t have any insurance and I’m not sure if I’m the missing rib. It would be too painful to find out otherwise. And I’ll admit I’m afraid of the truth. Either way, I plan on giving you a call one day when I get the nerve. I’m hoping you’ll be understanding and forgive me for being so abrupt and pushing the reject button on my cell phone when I see your name and the 301 area code on my Tmobile. My mother has told me so many times that I must be on drugs to have allowed my

About the Author
Portia Kirkland began her career in the music industry 20 years ago as a dancer/choreographer, which led to a recording contract with Cold Chillin’/Warner Bros. Records in 1991. After many successful years on the creative side of the business, particularly Hip Hop, Portia began working in marketing for major record companies in New York City and Atlanta. Portia is a native of New Jersey and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she began to explore her passion for writing. She is now the head of marketing for a record company in Atlanta, where she lives with her one daughter. This is Portia’s first novel and she gives her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ all of the glory for blessing her with the gift to write.
