Home-Based Businesses: Living the Dream or Dreaming of Living

            It is amazing how comfortable our “cultured” human nature can become. We are creatures of habit. We like things to be in their place, with nothing out of the ordinary. This is not to say that we don’t relish the occasional surprise or change of scenery. But, when it comes to day-to-day chores and activities, we like to “serve our time,” punch the clock, pick up our belongings, and call it a day as we leave our workload and responsibilities behind in the whiff of black smoke as we peel out of our employer’s parking lot.

            Somewhere, though, deep within there is a reservoir of untapped potential waiting for the opportune time to be released. In each of us there is a longing for something better, more fulfilling, and more enduring. No one that I’ve met, who is currently working for someone else, has ever admitted they are completely satisfied in their current employment capacity or income status. Ironically enough, those dissatisfied employees are the least likely to make the necessary changes and choices to alter the direction of their career path. If they were made aware of it, they could find an uncharted path of potential and a wide-open road of opportunity just waiting to be discovered by the determined few.

            The overwhelming tendency within us all is to give in to melancholy resignation and succumb to our humdrum conditions and surroundings. Since these factors most heavily influence our decision-making and course of action, we avoid any changes that may disrupt our comfort zone and push us into the unknown. The unknowns that haunt us would be, “Where will I derive my income?” or “How will I get customers?” or “What if I fail?” It is easy to understand why so many would rather dismiss the idea of plunging into the unknown realm of starting a home-based business and instead, stay right where life is most familiar and predictable.

However, instead of considering just the negative side of the equation, one must also consider the positive side. For every potential failure or risk of loss, there is an equal opportunity for unprecedented success and monetary increase! If only we could peer into the future outcomes that result from each choice we will one day make, we would be more apt to throw caution out the door and venture into the unknown where our dreams are waiting to become reality!

It has been said that perhaps the most common reply shared among the aging and retired when asked if they could change one thing about their lives is, “I wish I would have taken more risks.” How about you? Will you continue to dream of what life might have been, or will you live the dream that lies latent within you of what life truly can be? Only you can make that decision to leap off the precipice of possibility into the unknown chasm where faith, freedom, and your own future will brace your impact and anything imaginable can happen!
