Christina Harrison, a news reporter for CBS in New York got word that the Soviet Union was taking control of Kabul and the rest of Afghanistan. Although there was resistance by the holy leaders of Islam, it seemed as if the U.S.S.R. would succeed. She was to fly there immediately to write an investigative report. It was a top priority job that she was eager to do. She loved her job and it took priority over her personal love life. At the age of twenty-three, Christina had never been married. However, what she was soon to encounter in Afghanistan would change her life forever.
Osama bin Laden was starting to rise to power. He yearned for an opportunity to prove himself as a warrior for Islam. Islam is a religion prominent in the East where the Quran, the holy scripture of Islam, is studied. His first opportunity to declare a “jihad” or “holy war” was in the last days of 1979, when the Soviet Union invaded the Islamic country of Afghanistan. For bin Laden and other devout Muslims, the invasion was the start of a holy war. Osama started a resistance to the Soviet Union invasion of Afghanistan. And he won.
The Soviet Union claimed that the occupation of Afghanistan was at the request of their fellow Communists in the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan, who were struggling to hold onto power in their country’s capital of Kabul. To the United States and the rest of the world, it looked like an aggressive act by a superpower against its much smaller neighbor. A fierce resistance arose and war broke out. The United States was always hated by the Eastern World and especially, by the Muslim leaders of the Taliban. The United States is often referred to as “The Great Satan” by the Muslims. Therefore, any American reporter was also seen as evil. Christina Harrison was not safe; she was captured by the Taliban and leader of the Muslim world at that time. She was soon to become part of the harem of Osama bin Laden. It was lawful for a Muslim leader to have four wives at one time. Because Osama already had three wives, having another wife was legal. Bin Laden thought Christina was strikingly beautiful and after her capture, took her as his wife. Christina, however, did not feel comfortable in Osama bin Laden’s harem; she longed for a way to escape.
Christina came out of the hotel in a soft Kabul night. She signals a taxi. She tells the taxi driver to take her to the local television station; she is to do a report. The traffic that they encountered was heavy; there was a lot of stop and start. She was riding in the back of the taxi cab when suddenly two strange men disguised in masks showed up. They both had automatic rifles; one put a gun to the taxi driver’s head and told him to pull over. The other gunman put a gun to Christina’s ribs. Christina immediately lifted both of her arms in a surrendered position! She said: “Oh, my God, who are you?”
