About the Book

Lajja, a young woman from an Indian village in the Punjab, passionately strives to fulfill her life in early twentieth century United States after surviving female infanticide, dowry burning, famine, separation from her youthful lover, marriage to a man forty years older than herself in India and then racist terror from vigilantes and members of the Asian Exclusion League in California. Her determination parallels the background tale of turn-of-the-century Indian intrigues and struggles for dignity and independence from Britain.

About the Author

Surya Prakash Sinha published his first book at the age of fifteen in Kanpur, India, while in his second year of college – the book’s authorship was pirated by an older and wiser classmate. Passionate about justice, he left India in 1959 to seek higher education in the United States. Since then, he published six books in international law and jurisprudence, in addition to numerous articles and book reviews. His works have been partly responsible for a new movement in jurisprudential thought called Legal Polycentricity. His degrees include Doctor of the Science of Law, Master of Laws, Master of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Commerce, and Diploma of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants. He is the first Indian to become a law professor in the United States, as well as in Canada.

Surya Sinha won the Hackney Literary Award (First Prize), the Connecticut Commission on the Arts Fellowship for Fiction (First Place), and the National Writers Association Award for Novel (Second Prize) for a novel manuscript.

A devoted family man, an enthusiastic cook and Indian classical musician he is a kind and gracious namesake for Surya, the Hindu god of sun.
