Suddenly where there had been darkness, black as ink, there was absolute darkness. An absence of light. An absence of dark.
Nothing.
The heat that had been building steadily during his long journey now reached an almost intolerable level.
The voices in his head that had kept him company for so many years, so many miles were gone.
He drifted alone… alone, but strangely unafraid. He should have been frightened, his heart should have thundered, but he felt nothing.
No fear… no elation… nothing.
No, not nothing, but Nothing.
Having come so far, what was there to find?
Where was he?
When was he?
Who was he?
He tried to speak, but made no sound.
He tried to see, but was blind.
He tried to touch, but felt nothing.
When all external senses are removed, what is left?
Is there anything?
Are you anyone in such barren darkness?
He may have drifted, but had no way of knowing.
Very quietly a voice did manage to tickle its way through, a strangely alien sensation, in this place of no sensation.
‘Are you alright? Can you hear me? Are you there?’
It was soft and gentle, not an interrogation, more an offer of comfort if it were needed. The voice appeared to enter his head from the inside. There was after all, nowhere for it to come from. There was nowhere for anything to come from.
Every nerve strained to hear and he was sure his heart must be pounding, his breath coming in gasps, his hands suddenly curled into fists.
He replied silently.
He spoke to the voice inside his head, but received no reply.
He was alone.
Forever.
Only his thoughts remained.
How long is forever?
How is eternity measured?
Is there an end?
Is there a beginning?
And what happens when you reach one of them?
Can you journey back?
Or forward?
And then, for the briefest of moments, he knew that the lips he no longer felt were probably smiling - and even his thoughts left him.
He finally had his answer.
But what had been the question?

Russell K. Lewis is a nearly 50 year-old Englishman in search of a mid-life crisis.
Having discovered that database design wasn't quite as fulfilling as expected, he spent 30 years trying to decide what to do about it.
His first book is the result of having read far too much and having done not nearly enough.
Approaching middle age made him consider his options and resulted in a wade through an under-achieving imagination and finally getting some of it down on paper.
