Joy of the Relationship

Having the best relationship, starts with the relationship with yourself

In the beginning of a relationship did you ever notice how wonderful and exciting everything is?  Did you ever notice how perfect the person is that you choose to be in the relationship with, the sweet sound of their voice, the touch of their skin against yours, the soft and sweetness of their lips as they kiss you?  As you both stand there in amazement of the other, you never think that anything could ever feel as good as that.   Why are we so excited about being with another person for a long period of time?  Why it that we are is taught our whole lives to fight and be looked at as independent and then we are afraid to admit that we too want what everyone else has, the comfort and love and security of a mature adult relationship.  Is the relationship really worth all the work and trouble it takes to make it a success?  And the most important question of all, what does the relationship mean to the two people?

            This is a question that if asked will most likely have many different meaning to many different people.  The meaning and importance of having another person in our lives tells us a lot about ourselves and the other person.  While talking to my dear friend Andy the other day, he sat there and told me about his fears and concerns with relationships.  He voiced his feelings about us being ready for what the relationship requires of us.  And after our conversation I wondered, what all the excitement was about.  I mean, sure it is nice to have someone who is wonderful to spend our time with, someone who will love us and protect us.  We all want someone who believes in us and who we can give all those same things back to as well.   Sometimes I believe that defining a relationship is almost like interrupting the Bible.  The majority of people believe what it says, but it takes on many different meanings depending on who reads it. 

            I believe the goal of the relationship between two people is different based on the wants and needs of the two people involved in it.  Most people will say that they know the reason of a relationship, but what they may not realize is that they are secretly defining what their relationship is.  It is very easy for others to tell us what is wrong or missing in our lives when they have it in their own.  Sometimes it’s hard for us mere mortals to be strong for others when our own lives are nothing to look at as inspiration.   

            It’s a shame really, the journey of a relationship whether it be an intimate one or a friendship is still to this day very long.  The road has not gotten any easier to travel and the end result has still not been perfected enough to be guaranteed to us.  So why it is that it is so important to us to have one.  Are we not happy with just ourselves?  Is it our sole purpose here on earth to find someone else to share our time with?  Is the journey of life so difficult that we need someone else to suffer along with us?  Are the pain and suffering and heart ache all worth it in the end?
