About the Book

Smitty’s church arrived with a group of women from the congregation. Smitty and Dorothea’s grown children soon joined them, plus several grandkids. Everyone crowded around Dorothea until Dajour wondered how the woman could breathe. “I think we can go home now,” he told Grace. “Dorothea’s in good hands.” “Just a minute.” Grace picked up her purse, removed the checkbook, and started writing. “What are you doing?” “I’m writing her a check. She’s gonna need money to get through this thing. It’s the least we can do.” Dajour snatched the book from Grace’s hands and shoved it back into her purse. “Are you crazy? Don’t humiliate the woman by offering money in front of her friends. Besides that, she’s my responsibility. I’ll take care of her.” Grace’s mouth trembled. “I didn’t mean anything. It just seemed like a good idea to help her out a little bit.” Dajour took her arm and led her toward the door. “Baby, look over there.” He pointed toward Dorothea, who was dangling a grandchild on each knee. “That’s all she needs right now — her family and friends. I know you meant well, but you’ve got to learn something: Money can’t fix everything.”
