About the Book

Wilmington, Delaware, in 2007 observes the 175th anniversary of its 1832 incorporation as a city by an act of the Delaware General Assembly. During that century and three quarters, hundreds of citizens of Wilmington have served as mayors, council members or in other city offices. This volume is a chronicle of who they were and when they served, commemorating their public spirit and their work on behalf of their fellow citizens, carrying out the often  mundane municipal functions that make a city livable. Officials are listed both chronologically, by their dates of service in various offices, and in an alphabetical directory that notes the dates for each office held.

About the Author

The author, a life-long Wilmington resident, is a member of the Delaware Bar, and is certified as a planner by the American Institute of Certified Planners, and as a genealogist by the Board for Certification of Genealogists. He has served the City of Wilmington in various capacities since 1968, most notably as director of planning under Mayor William T. McLaughlin from 1980 to 1984, when he led the planning for Wilmington’s waterfront revitalization. City Council’s adoption of the plan and the innovative performance-based zoning regulations it proposed provided the necessary foundation for the riverfront redevelopment that has since taken place. A retired brigadier general in the Delaware Army National Guard, he is currently of counsel in the city’s Law Department, serving as senior legal adviser.
