About the Book

My name is Marion Ellis; I was born on the 25th August 1925. My father was in the Navy. My mother was not all that strong and before I was born had four other children, three girls and one boy. My mother was taken ill three months after I was born and she dies. The boy and two of the girls were sent to a Navy home. The other girl lived with an aunt and her husband (they had a pub down old Portsmouth) and the only pub in the South of England with a spiral staircase. They had one daughter who they spoiled. My sister had to work hard, getting up in the morning very early, cleaning all the men’s shoes who were staying there, that and other work was to be done before she went to school.
