About the Book

Bishop William Boyd Grove (United Methodist Church) writes:

Every pastor should run, not walk, to the nearest book store to buy Free Us For Joyful Obedience.  I was a pastor of congregations for twenty six years and I would have been a better pastor if this book had been available to me.  I recommend it for the following reasons:

**  Monty Brown is a great pastor and he practices what he is preaching in this book.

**  He has his theology right.  Pastoral care is a response to, and a sharing of, God's grace.

**  His writing style is interesting and compelling.  The nuggets are priceless.

This book is a must for every pastor.

*************

Free Us for Joyful Obedience is a step by step introduction to the fine art of prayerful pastoral caregiving, and a re-calling of the passion for ministry.  Monty Brown re-members us into approaching life from the counter-cultural world of grace.  His theology of pastoral caregiving emphasizes our basic goodness (being made in the very image of God) which honestly highlights our potential, instead of the typical yardstick that emphasizes our failures – the taunt of being not good enough.

Too often, particularly in a Church which feels threatened by diminishing numbers and social influence, the urge is toward bigger numbers as the only measure of success.  Free Us for Joyful Obedience underscores the importance of faithfulness, instead of the world's definition of success.

About the Author

Monty Brown spent fifteen years practicing law, including twelve as a Prosecuting Attorney.  Now, as a pastor for the same amount of time, he sees pastoral caregiving from the unique perspective of both professions.  Once a dispenser of punishment for people who made mistakes in their lives, he now seeks to be a vehicle and vessel of grace for people in the same situation.

Monty is senior pastor of an urban church in Charleston, West Virginia, chairs the Conference Order of Elders and has led work teams around the world for fifteen years.  His passions are family, storytelling, spiritual direction, church history, and bicycling.

John P. Waldeck, Director of Clinical Services, Rappahannock Rapidan  [Virginia] Community Services Board puts it like this:

Monty Brown has a clear understanding of how to establish “real” relationships that are therapeutic and compassionate.  He is able to relate sound therapeutic principles through humorous and heartfelt stories that both teach and inspire.  The chapter "Because …. Therefore" lays out the basis for a life that is filled with peace and fulfillment.

The model he presents can be used to work therapeutically with an individual or as a primary theme in guiding a congregation.  I recommend Joyful Obedience to all who seek to have relationships that free us for participating more fully in the journey of the spirit.
