He had just stepped out of the shower and barely had a towel wrapped around him when she began “Edward, let’s see a marriage counselor. I’m sure it’s just what we need to help our marriage.” “A marriage counselor! Miranda, have you lost your mind? Wait, I take that back; you definitely have lost your mind. Why would I want to do that?” Her hopes began to fade, but she wasn’t giving up without a fight. “Not you, Edward, us. It’s obvious that our marriage is in trouble.” “Miranda, you don’t know what you’re talking about.” Her confidence withered more with each word he said, but she was determined to stay strong. “I just thought since we can’t seem to work through our issues ourselves, maybe we should seek out professional help. It’s not like we’d be the first couple to do it. It happens all the time.” “Look Miranda. I’m tired of this conversation and it’s going to end here and now. You seem to think there’s a problem with our marriage. This is not a marriage problem at all. Just give it time. It’ll pass. It’s probably hormonal. You’ll get over it.” His eyes shifted down. Miranda looked to see her robe untied, her breasts exposed. Repulsed by the very thought of Edward looking at her naked body, she wrapped the robe tight from the neck down and yanked the belt into a knot. She was pleading now, “Edward, please, we’re running out of time. I’m afraid if we wait much longer, we won’t be able to fix it.” “FIX WHAT, MIRANDA?” His bark was more an insulting statement than a question. “Our marriage doesn’t have a problem, we don’t have a problem and I certainly don’t have a problem. That leaves only one person who has a problem. And since you’re the one, I suggest you see someone to help yourself get over it. I certainly won’t be joining you. And do it soon. I’m losing patience.” “Edw….” “NO FURTHER DISCUSSION!” Miranda stood frozen. He shook the can of shaving cream. She looked into the mirror. Their reflections stared back at them. Their eyes never met. Slowly, she backed out of the room. Miranda dropped her robe and turned on the shower faucet. She felt like she had been sucker-punched. She was sure she had found the solution. Edward…Impossible. How could he? What is he thinking? Doesn’t he realize this can help us? Maybe he doesn’t want it to get better? He thinks if he ignores it long enough, it will just go away.
