The harsh ring of the phone pierced through my dreams with a rush of panic and dread. Nothing good made someone call at this hour of the night. The voice on the other end of the phone screeched with fear and I was bathed in a wash of terror. “Erik’s being arrested. You’ve got to come quick, Mrs. Stearns.” I asked to speak to Erik but the officer took the phone instead. “You can come down to the police station in the morning,” the police officer said. He handed the phone back to the girl friend who told me they had another fight. Erik was so angry he’d left the apartment and broken the windshields of a Mercedes. The week that followed was a nightmare as we learned how helpless a parent of an adult child can be in the legal system. Erik was sure because we had not contacted him that we did not want to help. Little did he know how hard we were trying to reach him. We were blocked by the system. If he didn’t call us, we could not contact him. Almost a week went by without word. Everyday, my husband would go to the courthouse hoping to catch Erik as he was led from jail to the courtroom to no avail. One morning as he left to try again, I sat in absolute pain and despair. I could not reach my son. As I plummeted to the bottom of the well, I spoke a quiet prayer, “God, if you exist, I need you. I don’t know what to do but I know my son is scared and does not know where to turn. I love him and I want him to know we are here to help. You probably hate me for my denial of you. You could easily see me as unworthy and sinful. If you are the God, I hope you are, you will hear me. Erik needs to know he is loved and that we want to help. Please help him help my husband find a way to connect with him. I know, at this point, that there is nothing else to be done but through you. You loved your son, Jesus, and I know you will understand my despair. Please help me, if not for me, for the love of our sons.” Finally, the tears came; tears that had been held in check for almost a week. And as they quieted into sobs, I felt the same presence I had felt many times before when I journaled. And I heard the Love of God whisper these words, ~ I am here. I have always been here, my beloved child. I am here and what you ask is done. I love you and always will for you are and will always be One with Me.
