About the Book

Lanikai Flowers

Puamana Dow’s four beautiful daughters, all named after flowers, are the heroines of this Hawaiian love story, the sequel to Lanikai

The daughters of Puamana were flowers that grew
To blossom and grow near cerulean blue
Where moonlight rippled on waters divine,
Where bright morning sun would rise and shine:

                                    Lehua, Hawaii’s bright red flower,
Whenever picked, the rains would shower
                                    Lokelani, her family’s exquisite rose
                                    Whose colored petals inspired prose.

                                    Ilima, named for Oahu’s flower,
                                    A golden orange for every hour;
                                    Mokihana, the citrus flowering fruit
                                    Unique as Kauai’s island root.

These girls grew up to fit their names
Bloomed and laughed and played their games
As happy girls of sand and sea
Near sun swept waters, they were free.

But then, as women, time would touch
Their loving hearts; they’d suffer much.
And yet, in spite of all their pain,
They’d rally to be whole again.

                                    Lehua, Lokelani, Ilima, Mokihana,
                                    The four daughters of Puamana.

About the Author

About the Author

I have lived in Santa Barbara for years and grew up in Lanikai in a house on Mokulua Drive where many gathered and created my childhood memories that are intermittently inserted in Lanikai and Lanikai Flowers.

My friends, like those of Ilima, were always there.  All the characters are fictional, but the Hawaiian uniqueness, the sense of appreciation for the land and its beauty are perhaps more enhanced in memory when one has to live away from it.  I miss it and all the people whom I love who remain in the land where palm trees sway.

Aloha pumehana to them all.
