When the Sky Comes Falling Down
Is the sky really falling? If you haven’t heard by now, listen up. The end of the world is near. Any idiot can see that, right? Time Magazine is only one of countless publications to tell you what everyone already knows: there’s a crisis of global proportions and it affects us all.
The coming climatic cataclysm is the new boogeyman on the block and is so serious it’s going to get you, your children, and your children’s children. It will also affect your second cousin, your cousin’s cousin, your children’s second cousins, your children’s second cousins from a previous marriage, your hamster’s hamster, and the clone of your hamster’s clone. Whew. Did we leave anyone out?
They say that those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. Of course, they said the same thing about eighth grade algebra, but somehow most us still managed to pass the course and graduate.
Chances are, we’ll probably weather the latest global climatic Armageddon, too. Because you see, the apocalyptic quote we started with is from Time Magazine.
But, as it turns out, it’s from the June 24, 1974 issue when the concern was, if we didn’t do something immediately, we would be in another Ice Age within thirty years. Back then it was crucial that we act because if we didn’t, there would be global disasters of unimaginable proportions. You know, real wrath-of-god type stuff.
Only one problem. The fear mongers and doomsayers were wrong. This should come as no surprise to anyone who has ever left the house with an umbrella, only to carry it around all day without using it.
