“A secret is a secret for a reason.” The soft voice and small stature of the woman belied the strength and knowledge she possessed. I haven’t met too many like her in this life. Kindness was a part of her nature as she was always doing something for other people. It wasn’t simply the fact that she was a maid for the family next door, she actually liked doing things for others she cared for. Sure it could have been my youthful view of the situation but I know she was always there to help me out. And I wasn’t even family. Today, for instance, she had let me help her bake for a Halloween party the family was having. In return I would spend countless hours listening to her ramble on. Again she was imparting her useful advice on everything under the sun. She quickly glanced in my direction to see if I was still listening before she bent to remove the hot pan of chocolate chip cookies from the oven. Placing them on the counter to cool she turned and looked directly at me. “I have been on this earth a long time and this is what I’ve learned. To be happy in this life there are two things you should never try to do: Disturb a soul at rest or uncover a buried secret. Now mark my words honey if you live by this you’ll be a whole lot happier.” Then she set about getting the cookies onto a plate for us to try before the rest of the guests showed up. She had a way of making me feel very special.
The words spoken that cool October day haunted me often. I knew in my soul that she was right but a young and curious spirit such as mine was hard to tame. What she didn’t let me in on was that sometimes these very things come for us, and outrunning them is virtually impossible. Fate is a tricky thing. My sister and I found out the truth behind her words the hard way. Our story lies within my heart always, but it began long before we were ever born. Perhaps I should start there. I’ll tell it to you now as best as I recall it. Maybe, just maybe it will serve as a reminder to take nothing for granted in this life...or the next.

About the Author
Natalie N. Johnson was born and raised in northern Florida. She graduated from Florida State University with a BS in Anthropology. At age 21, she published her first book of poetry "Innocence and Beyond" and has now followed up with her first historical fiction. Her spare time is spent with family and friends causing various types of mischief which makes great material for her work.
