The author, with his wife, walked Northern England coast to coast in 2004. Coast to Coast gives a daily account of the 19 days…190 mile walk…through 16 villages or hamlets.
Vicariously walk Northern England’s mountains and hills; experience its valleys and rivers; and view its moors and sea cliffs. The treck crosses three National Parks (Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors).
The walk is truly a journey through time while learning about the land’s history and its colorful nature. Listen to the folklore and legends of the indigenous people. Reminders are everywhere that the historical past still graces our present through dry stone walls climbing up the green hillsides, ancient cathedrals, old Roman roads, and centuries-old hamlets and pubs.
Wide open landscapes through mountains, dales, and rich pastures will be viewed in the 170 photographs of England’s bountiful countryside. The author hopes you can almost breath the invigorating air of this island nation as you view the many natural charms, follow meandering streams and enjoy cool woodlands.
Experience what it would be like to face a bull with no way forward, see a newborn calf and the shepherding of sheep.
The walk from the Irish Sea (St. Bees) to the waters of the North Sea on the Yorkshire Coast (Robin Hood’s Bay) reveals the people, scenery, foods, aching legs and challenges one would encounter on such a walk across a nation.
Join the steps of other “coasters” on the trail and experience their camaraderie as they find their way across this beautiful country on foot.
If you love to walk…you’ll have to take this walk too!
The author has written Coast to Coast just as he and his wife walked it…a day at a time. This allows the readers to join their daily pace and cadence. They hope you will be inspired, as they were, to take a walk of a lifetime as you see changing landscapes and hear their stories about the people and places they encountered.
The author, a United States citizen, felt stretched to be traveling to another country and taking an unsigned walk of such distance; but after much study and with the help of Sherpa Expeditions, a Britain-based organization (www.sherpa-walking-holidays.co.uk, phone 44(0)20 8577 2717) he felt confident to give it a “go” as the English say it!
Lovers of walking…England…adventurous travel…meeting new people…history…and tea and scones will enjoy the great diversity of this English masterpiece called Coast to Coast Walking!
