There are three basic parts to this book:
Stem Lessons,
Stem Tests, and
Stem Bingo games.
This book is designed to give one stem lesson per week.
1. Stems = Each stem lesson introduces 10 new stems, their meaning, and a word example for each stem. Make a transparency of this stem page. Also, make a copy for each student of the Stem Form, front and back, which is found in the Appendix. This form is used for the students to copy their stem lessons. (Make a transparency of the Stems’ Practice Lesson to use to explain how each lesson works.)
2. Stem Test = Make a copy of the stem test for each student. They will define the 10 stems and then find the meaning of the unusual words by using the meaning of the stems. Most of the word’s definitions contain the exact stem definition while some contain a synonym. (Make a transparency of the Stems’ Practice Lesson to use to explain how each lesson works.)
3. Stem Bingo = There is a bingo game designed for every third lesson. The bingo games can be used as a lesson in itself or they can be used in addition to the weekly lesson. Make a transparency of the Stem Bingo lesson. Make copies of the Stem Bingo card, front and back, which can be found in the Appendix. Have the students copy the stems onto their bingo card. Six of the stems will not be used. Make a card stock copy of the Bingo Calling Cards with Definitions and cut them apart. Provide cubes to cover the stems when called out.

About the Author
Sheila Statham Thompson has taught at risk students in grades 5 to 8 for 23 years. Reading comprehension has always been a challenge for many of her students. Because of the introduction of the new state’s standards that requires the teaching of stems, this book of 36 different lessons was created to help enhance reading comprehension.
