Limericks For Children and Other Special Folks

Who gives a mighty roar.

With the bristly mane about his neck,

Does his throat get sore?

The Outback is home to the kangaroo

They hop about with pride.

The moms have a pouch in front

To give the kids a ride.

When grandpa sits to milk the cows,

The cats line up to see

Which ones get squirted on the face,

And that just tickles me.

Have you heard about the weasel?

About the mulberry bush did hop.

The monkey chased him there, I do declare

Until he just went pop.

I once was afraid of the thunderclap

I'd cower down and cry,

My mother told me it was a wooden cart

Bringing potatoes for her to fry.

THE HOOT OWL

The hoot owl is a wise old bird.

It sits high up in a majestic oak

The more it listened to what it heard

The less it ever spoke.

The more it harkened to each sound

The more it learned about

All the creatures on the ground.

There was no need to shout

Its senses are awfully keen.

It uses its ears to hear

And its eyes take in the scene

There is nothing for it to fear

So it snoozes all the day

And shows no sign of fright

It doesn’t give a hoot all day

Because it stays awake at night.

The smart things that all owls do

Should come as no surprise

They always ask the question "who?"

So we think them very wise.

MERMAID PLAYMATE

Pretty mermaid of the sea,

Won’t you come up and play with me?

I cannot come down where you dwell,

I cannot hold my breath that well.

My how lovely you do look

Just like a picture in my book.

You are pretty as a fairy’s wish

A girl on top, tail of a fish.

We cannot play a game of tag

Without feet, your run would drag.

You cannot even jump a rope,

I will not say to, I’d be a dope.

We cannot wade there on the beach

You’d be offshore and out of reach.

I do so wish you were my pal,

Are you more fish or little gal?

I’d like to have you as my playmate

On the beach, we cannot roller-skate.

We could build castles on the sand

You don’t need legs if you do not stand.

Do you know a game we could play?

I cannot go down where you stay.

Oh, won’t you tell me if you can

A fun type game we may plan.

When the sun is gone and there’s no light,

Where do you slumber in the night?

The waves grow high and crash the shore,

We cannot play there any more.

My mother’s calling me to eat

I must go now, you are so neat.

Does your mother know that you are here?

Do you live far or very near?

We’ll meet again, it is a date,

I must go now, it’s getting late.

Good-bye mermaid, my special friend

I’m waking up, this dream does end.

FAMILY PRAYER

When the frost is upon the pumpkin

And the barn is filled with hay

And the sun has dipped a little

To shorten up the day,

And the hearth is roaring brightly

To keep the household warm

And the kids are snuggled soundly

And we know they’re safe from harm

After the telling of a bedtime story

While tucked away in their beds

We know they’ll soon be sleeping

Like darling sleepyheads.

Then we know the world is contented

And our hearts are all a-glow

And our prayers then are answered

And that’s all we need to know.
