She put her head down and started to cry. This was blowing my mind. I had never seen this woman shed a tear in all my life. And now at her son’s bedside she was crying. Not because she failed as a Mother, but because she was a Mother who loved her son dearly no matter what.
“Taylor, I think I am going to the Nurse’s Station and talk to one of those Nurses. I want them to tell me what’s going on.” My Mother said and wiped her eyes.
“Okay Mama, I’ll just sit here and talk to Matt.”
She walked out the room and I took her seat next to Matt. I just sat there for a moment looking at him. He looked so peaceful. He looked like he was just sleeping. I grabbed his hand.
“Matt you have to wake up….I need someone to talk to….I have something on my mind. Matt can you hear me? I met a guy….and he is fine as wine, but he’s married. He tricked me Matt…me…can you believe it, a player getting played. What is the world coming to?” I started laughing. Hoping that it would make Matt laugh too. He never moved.
“Matt…please wake up…I need you to tell me what to do. I am so confused. Matt please…don’t leave me here with Mama. You know I need you to interfere when she and I are arguing.”
My brother usually laughed when I talked about our Mother. He claimed we were just alike. I totally disagreed.
“Matt….you are missing so much here. Sarah drove here like a little old lady. I think she drove less than the speed limit all the way. Now you know that the ride up here is only forty-five minutes, but it took us an hour and a half.”
He never moved, so I decided to just sit there holding his hand. I just stared at him. His face was so serene. His skin had gotten darker but his face basically looked the same. I sat there thinking about our last conversation. He had called me on the phone right before he got real sick.
“What’s up Taylor?” He said as soon as I said hello.
“What’s up Matt? How you doing?”
“Fine. I was just sitting here thinking about you and decided to call your crazy ass.”
