Something told me to take the aisle seat in row six, instead, I was assigned a window seat in row three, next to a mom with a lap child who would not sit still. Our taxi down the runway at Chicago O'Hare, the world's busiest airport seemed endless. Captain Louis announced we were number twenty-five in line for take off...Talking about a traffic jam!
This is no way to start a vacation, I left this kind of drama at home, Rhamya wanted to scream. To avoid any further distractions she decided to check her e-mail on the laptop, wishful thinking, she'd hoped Major could at least pretend she'd be missed, nothing too mushy, just have a nice time would do...No such luck. Unsurprisingly, there was a message from Tomas who was forever thoughtful, she struggled whether or not to read it and choose the latter. No Rhamya, we are not going to do this, focus on the fact you have left everything behind for the next seven days, you are nobody's mentor, wife, mother, taxi, clothes washer, or cook, just a beautiful woman meeting her sisters for a much needed retreat, some...Me Time!
It's going to be great to see everyone again and it has been such a long time since they have all been together. The four most important women in her life, Savoy, Deville, Kayla and Mercedes, each one different, yet unique in their own way. We all live in different cities across the country and thanks to cyber space we've managed to stay connected over the years...Maybe this has something to do with our longevity.
What's so remarkable about their story, if Rhamya had not crossed paths with each one of them, chances are they never would have met. She gazed out among the clouds as her thoughts drifted towards the four friends she would meet in St. Thomas:
Savoy Davis, the female version of Johnnie Cochran, multi-dimensional, beautiful, feisty like Lisa Raye with the charisma of a Kimberly Elise. In addition to owning the largest black law firm in Phoenix, she also managed to land one of the best husbands in the world, when she married Walker Davis. Most of us questioned his decision to leave a prominent position with the stock exchange to raise their children while she continued to pursued her law career. In her quest to be master of her own faith, Savoy takes the title independent woman to an unobtainable level, in doing so, she manages to finds ways to belittle her husband's contribution to their success. Should the truth be told, if it were not for his early investments, she would not have been able to start her own law firm after being passed over for partner with her previous employers. Despite it all, Walker seems content in raising their two children while indulging in his passion for cooking, and to his credit, he has landed a segment on the food channel for the upcoming fall season. It is truly amazing they have no spiritual connections to any religious organization as much as they have been blessed.
