They Created Us is a family’s journey through the disability world that begins with their second son’s encounter with Hflu meningitis at six months of age.  Through their journey, you will learn the complexities of the bureaucracy along with strategies to maneuver through a sometimes unresponsive system.  Special Education, Medicaid Waivers, EPSDT, and Independent Case Management are all part of a family’s world when their child experiences disabilities.  This family’s journey uncovers injustices and allows opportunity for basic rights to be realized throughout the systems that were put in place to help children with disabilities.

About the Author

Denise Mercado was born in Brooklyn, New York.  Shortly before her sixteenth birthday, she moved to Plainview, Long Island with her family.  At twenty-one years of age, Denise married and began a life as a military spouse.  In 1982, Denise gave birth to her second son, Danny.  Life took a sharp turn after Danny suffered a severe bout of meningitis.  As a result, Denise embarked on an advocacy journey that has uncovered numerous injustices throughout the bureaucratic systems that support people with disabilities.

Denise is an honors graduate of Campbell University.  She is also a graduate of the first North Carolina Partners in Policymaking Program (1993) and the national Project Leadership Program (2002).  Denise has held several positions throughout the disability world, including project manager for one of the North Carolina Self-Determination Projects, executive director of The Arc of Cumberland County, and co-director of the Special Needs Education Center.  Denise is presently co-owner of a North Carolina Medicaid provider agency that shifts control of Medicaid dollars to individuals with disabilities through fiscal intermediary and employer of record services.  Denise and her husband, John, have also established Team Daniel, LLC in honor of their son, Danny, who continues to inspire them both to stand up for what is right.
